All About the Novel

89 Carruther’s Place was where feminist writer Dr. Jessica Winward and her daughter, Laura, lived. Jessica purchased the brownstone back in the early 90s, during her divorce from an accountant named Ben Winward. For Barclay O’Malley, Ben’s second ex-wife and Jessica’s former student, the residence was a vortex, where her past and present united in the most unexpected way.

Barclay invites us into her world the morning of Jessica’s funeral. Her compilation of memories becomes her final tribute to her wife: the completion of Jessica’s life story.

In 1961, Jessica is Adjunct Professor of English at a Condigon University in Massachusetts to compensate for her husband’s unemployment. Barclay befriends her professor and indulges Jessica and her associates’ ideas of an equality movement for women. Soon, the young student’s admiration for her teacher’s goals in starting a revolution develops into a secret crush. While her love for her remains a fantasy, Jessica lives her life unknowing of her student’s feelings.

When Jessica resigns from the college, she uses her writing career as the vehicle to push her women’s coalition, WON, into development. Years on, motherhood and community uprising against her organization take hold, and she loses contact with Barclay.

After fifteen controversial years of celebrity status (admired by some and despised by others) Jessica hopes her 43rd birthday celebration will reunite her with lost friends and mark the end of her writing career in style. What she receives is Barclay.

Jessica’s most private thoughts and feelings for a woman she hasn’t seen in twenty years ignite life-long friendship, compassion, and love. Barclay’s sacred, pure emotion and unrequited passion for her role model from long ago are finally reciprocated.

The two women share their lives in an atypical arrangement, and their lifestyle doesn’t come without resentment, opposition, and sorrow. Nevertheless, they promise to devote their love to each other and face all obstacles together.

Carruther’s Place is where it begins and ends.
